You Found Me

This year for Christmas we broke our family tradition of being home on Christmas morning. Instead we went to visit my parents and then let Buddy spend the following week with them. When we told him what our plans were, Buddy was really worried about whether Santa would find him or not.

So the morning of Christmas Eve, before we left, Buddy left a note for Santa under the Christmas tree.

“Dear Santa, Mom, Dad and I will be at Grandma and Grandpa’s house for Christmas.”

Even after several reassurances that Santa would indeed find us, Buddy still wasn’t convinced.

Once we arrived at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and he started to play with his cousins, he seemed to forget about his fears at least for a little while. As the day went on, he continued to ask me if Santa would find him and I continued to tell him he would.

Then at dinner, a wonderful thing happened. One of my father’s co-workers is Santa for the Holidays and he happens to live not far from my parents. Apparently he saw all the cars at the house and decided to drop by unannounced. When the doorbell rang, we were all a little confused as everyone expected that night was already in the house. You should have seen the children’s eyes and heard all the excitement when Santa walked through the door. He was immediately crushed by the kids giving him hugs. And then I got the most wonderful gift of all, my son turned a to me with the brightest, happiest smile then turned back to Santa and said:

“Santa, you found me!”

To see his innocent joy was truly amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him that excited. That is a memory I will truly treasure.

To this day my, father says he didn’t arrange to have Santa come to the house. But I think he enjoyed getting to play his own kind of Santa that night. His grin was almost as big as the kid’s.

Thanks Dad.
